We begin at Praça Carlos Alberto, a charming, less touristy square with medieval roots. This spot is a microcosm of Porto's rich culture, boasting museums, eateries, and lively esplanades. The bustling Porto Belo flea market is there every Saturday. The intricate Portuguese Calçada pattern in the pavement that leads to the square's statue is a delightful way to start.
A stunning mural of Dom Quixote and Sancho Panza by Mesk, Fedor & Mots, inaugurated in April 2014, became the city's first-ever legal graffiti. This artwork marks the entrance to Rua Miguel Bombarda, arguably Porto's most “alternative” street. Previously overlooked, this street has been reborn as the heart of the Porto Art District and is now filled with art galleries, hip bars, and concept stores.
As we make our way through Porto's streets, you will be struck by the stark contrasts between conventional city streets, ancient buildings and vibrant urban art.
We continue to the Teatro Carlos Alberto to see “Ar” and then to the Steak’n Shake where a 20 meter mural of 8,000 hand painted tiles awaits us.
Your tour through this open air exhibit of some of the best street art in the world will take you to Flores Street and Ferreira Borges Market where magnificent and contrasting works will be presented and discussed. This historical plaza shows Porto's cultural diversity. a mix of museums, eateries, and the lively Porto Belo flea market, all setting the stage for our street art adventure. We discuss Street Art with all its complexity: the origins, social and commercial aspects, and the diverse artistic expressions of street art.
Porto’s first legal street art mural. This piece, a collaboration between artists Mesk, Fedor, and Mots, depicts the iconic characters in a modern interpretation and marks a significant moment in the city's acceptance of street art on a street now renowned for its galleries, bars, and unique shops.
BerriBlue’s tile work entitled “Santa Lucía”. Her work is very personal involving mortality, sexual identity, mental health and personal identity. We will see more of her work during the tour.
Showcasing Martinha Maia's abstract mural “Ar,” a vast artwork that invites varied interpretations and seamlessly integrates with the neighborhood.
You’ll see a 20-meter-long mural composed of 8,000 hand-painted tiles by Joana Vasconcelos. This is a collaboration between the artist and the burger franchise and showcases Vasconcelos' unique approach to public art.
We highlight Tamara Alves’ work “S&D - European Pillar of Social Rights”. This piece symbolizes inner evolution and the importance of nurturing oneself and others. It celebrates raw, primal emotions and the human-animal connection.
The city's first free wall represents a turning point in Porto's street art policy. This two sided 250sqm mural contrasts Hazul's abstract figures with Mr. Dheo's hyper-realistic style, depicting his father holding Porto in his hand.
We see three strikingly different works. The “Perspicacious Cat” by Liqen, “My Blood is Your Blood” by Rui Chafes and “Fons Vitae”.
An abstract mural by Mots pays tribute to both the market and its urban setting. this work surrounds the entire building and invites the viewer to see the market in its urban setting.
Daniel Eime's “Mira”. This mural of an aging woman’s face sybolises life and the neighborhood's aging charm. The identity of this person remains a mystery.
“Look at Porto” by Vhils probably the country’s most prominent artist at the moment and a great way to round out your Porto Street Art Free Walking Tour. His techniques of creative destruction transform a dead white wall into something new.
